When first entering service in early 1964 D1003 sported a green livery along with distinctive red buffer beams and red backed number and nameplates, a colour combination that was only carried by seven of the class. The Westerns worked out of  Paddington and their principle mainline services were to Exeter, Newton Abbot, Plymouth and Penzance in the South West, either via Swindon and Bristol or Newbury and Westbury. Other routes included Cardiff and Swansea in South Wales and up to Banbury and Birmingham in the Midlands. They could also be seen on parcel and freight services and were regularly seen hauling china clay workings around the south west.

About our paper

All our prints are printed using water based inks on sustainably sourced 315gsm Cold Press Watercolour Paper (CPWP). A 100% cotton rag paper with a matte finish and a tight, highly textured surface resemblant of etching paper.

Modelled after a true old world watercolour paper the natural white, OBA free base of this archival quality ‘cold press’ paper lends a traditional feel to our archival inkjet fine art prints.

The rough textured surface is coated with a matte coating, compatible with both pigment and dye inkjet printers providing a stable base for our images and ensuring they last for years.
